Margarita
This drink is perhaps has a more elaborate
history than any other cocktails, with many different legends of
how it was created. Here are a selection (if you know any more,
please let us know and we will be more than happy to add them to
our list!!).
Legend 1:
The drink was created by Margarita Samas at a
Christmas party in the Mexican town of Acapulco. As a party
game, Margarita would mix cocktails behind the bar and her
guests would rate the results. Her mixture of 3 parts Tequila, 1
part Triple Sec and 1 part Lime was rated as her best mixture.
Her friends started to chant her name: "Margarita, Margarita..."
and this legendary cocktail was born. Word
spread quickly to Hollywood, then the rest of the world... the
rest (as they say) is history.

Legend 2:
A bartender named Pancho Morales, who worked
in a bar called Tommy's Place in Juarez, Mexico, was asked to
mix a "Magnolia" cocktail. Pancho could only recall that
Cointreau was one of the ingredients. He improvised and added
Tequila and Lime. Fortunately for Pancho, the customer liked the
new drink and he entitled it "Margarita", after a daisy
species.... A lucky escape for Pancho it would seem!!
Legend 3:
Spanish born, Enrique Bastante Gutierrez was
a 1940's world class bartender - he had won many prizes for both
his techniques and his drinks. Enrique was allegedly asked to
mix a new drink by Rita Heyworth - a movie icon. He titled the
cocktail as a play on the customer's name.
Legend 4:
In 1938, the Margarita has been rumoured to
have been invented in the Rancho Del Gloria Bar on Rosarita
Beach, Mexico. Legend has it that there was a showgirl, Marjorie
King, who was allergic to all alcohol except Tequila. Whilst she
usually drank neat shots, the bartender, Danny Herrera, offered
her a new drink combining Tequila, Triple Sec and Lime Juice,
served over crushed ice. Mr Herrera translated Marjorie's name
into Spanish, giving the world the Margarita.

To make this drink, first prepare the
salt-rimmed glass. To do this, add a small amount of lime juice
to the rim or lip of a cocktail (or Martini) glass, then dip it
into a saucer of salt to get a good coating. Add the Tequila,
Cointreau,
and Lime Juice into a shaker filled with hard ice cubes. Give
the mixture a good shake, then strain into your salt-rimmed glass.
Finish the drink by garnishing with a classic wheel of lime.
The Margarita can also be enjoyed when served
over crushed ice or as a frozen drink. To make a Frozen
Margarita, add the above ingredients to a blender along with 7
or 8 cubes worth of crushed ice. Blend until the mixture is
slushy and serve in the salt-rimmed glass as before.
The popularity of this drink actually means that
a glass has been named after it. It has an extra large rim which
is perfect for salting. This glass can also be referred to as a
"coupette".
